The Unicorns Project
Sao-Paulo Uberbau Artist's residency 2023

The project “The Unicorns” is the start of a photography collaborative with the gay football team, the Unicorns, in Sao Paulo. Following the group online and then meeting a few times during their games in Sao Paulo in late 2023 during my artist’s residency there, the project includes an interview with the group’s co-founder Bruno Host, short video clips in which some of the group’s players telling the story of how and why they joined the group [translation to English to be followed] and a photoshoot with the players.

The Unicorns represents more than just a football team; they stand as a symbol of inclusivity and resilience within Brazil's LGBTQ community. Founded in São Paulo in 2014, The Unicorns provides a safe and supportive space for LGBTQ individuals to participate in the sport they love, free from discrimination and prejudice.

Despite facing challenges and societal stigma, The Unicorns have garnered widespread support and recognition for their dedication to promoting LGBTQ rights through football. By proudly displaying rainbow colours and embracing their identities on the pitch, they challenge stereotypes and break down barriers in a traditionally hyper-masculine sport.

Beyond their achievements on the field, The Unicorns serve as ambassadors for LGBTQ visibility and acceptance, inspiring others to embrace their true selves and pursue their passions without fear. As they continue to defy expectations and pave the way for future generations of LGBTQ athletes, The Unicorns remind us of the transformative power of sport to foster unity, diversity, and respect for all.
