Shading Light
This series of workshops was developed in collaboration with refugees and asylum seekers from Jollof Café, using traditional textile patterns from participants' countries of origin as a starting point for creative exploration. Through conversation, storytelling, and collage-making, participants reflected on themes of identity, heritage, migration, and belonging, creating artworks that combined personal narratives with cultural motifs from their homelands.
The workshops provided a welcoming space for cultural exchange, creative expression, and community building, enabling participants to share experiences and celebrate the diversity of their backgrounds. The resulting artworks formed a collective exploration of memory, resilience, and the connections between past and present.
Works produced during the project were exhibited as part of Refugee Week 2025 at Jubilee Library in Brighton and at Colonnade House in Worthing, bringing participants' voices and experiences to a wider public audience.
